By Toyin Odesomi, Abuja

The Nigerian government has concluded arrangements for the construction of five new, world class international airports.
Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, announced in Abuja, that the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the award of contract for the immediate take-off of construction work on the terminals.
The five new airports are to be located in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and Enugu.
Once documentation is complete
She stated that the Council approved the sum of one hundred and six billion Naira for the award of contract for the projects, to consist of five new terminals and six perishable cargo terminals.
According to the Minister, ‘’ the contracts for the construction of the five airports have a lifespan of twenty-four months. The projects are to be executed with a concessionary loan of twenty-two years with five years moratorium at an interest rate of two percent per annum.’’
Mrs. Oduah said the construction would commence as soon as all the documentation were completed.
“In a few days’ time, I shall be returning to China to sign contract for the take-off of construction work on the five brand new terminals,” she said.
Aviation transformation agenda
The Minister said that the projects were part of the Nigerian government’s road map to achieving its transformation agenda in the aviation sector.
” For us as a ministry and government, we consider this development a huge opportunity to put to practical effect, the present administration’s Transformation Agenda.’’ She noted.
Mrs. Oduah added that with the construction of the new terminals, Nigerians and the travelling public will be provided with modern airports befitting the nation.
“What this means is that before the end of the lifespan of the present administration, the ministry would have been able to bequeath to Nigerians the airports of their dreams,” Mrs. Oduah said.
